Media Protection (MP) Family
Also known as: MP family
The MP family covers 9 NIST SP 800-171 requirements governing protection, handling, transport, sanitization, and destruction of media containing CUI.
The Media Protection (MP) family contains 9 NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 security requirements that govern how the contractor protects media containing Controlled Unclassified Information across its lifecycle.
Key MP requirements include protecting media (MP.L2-3.8.1), limiting access to CUI on media (MP.L2-3.8.2), sanitizing or destroying media before disposal (MP.L2-3.8.3), marking media (MP.L2-3.8.4), controlling media access (MP.L2-3.8.5), protecting media during transport (MP.L2-3.8.6), controlling removable media (MP.L2-3.8.7), prohibiting use of portable storage with no identifiable owner (MP.L2-3.8.8), and protecting backed-up CUI (MP.L2-3.8.9).
A C3PAO will sample media sanitization records and verify the contractor used a NIST SP 800-88 approved method for each piece of media disposed.
