Tabletop Exercise
Also known as: TTX
A discussion-based exercise where team members walk through a hypothetical incident scenario to test the incident response plan. Required by IR.L2-3.6.3.
A tabletop exercise (TTX) is a discussion-based exercise in which the incident response team gathers around a table (literally or virtually) to walk through a hypothetical incident scenario. The facilitator presents the scenario, asks the team how they would respond at each stage, and surfaces gaps in the plan.
For CMMC purposes, IR.L2-3.6.3 requires the contractor to test the incident response capability — and a tabletop exercise is the most common way to satisfy that requirement. Annual tabletop is the typical cadence.
A C3PAO will ask for evidence of the most recent tabletop: the scenario, the participants, the findings, and the corrective actions taken.
