Personnel Security (PS) Family

Also known as: PS family

The PS family covers 2 NIST SP 800-171 requirements governing background screening and access termination for personnel handling CUI.

The Personnel Security (PS) family is the smallest NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 control family, with just 2 security requirements: PS.L2-3.9.1 (screen individuals before authorizing access to organizational systems containing CUI) and PS.L2-3.9.2 (ensure that organizational systems containing CUI are protected during and after personnel actions such as terminations and transfers).

A C3PAO will sample background screening records and verify the termination workflow — particularly the time between an employee's last day and the deactivation of their accounts. Contractors who can show same-day deprovisioning sail through; those who can't are flagged.
