CUI Registry

Also known as: NARA CUI Registry

The official NARA-maintained list of CUI categories. Defines what counts as Controlled Unclassified Information and how to mark and handle each category.

The CUI Registry is the official, public catalog of Controlled Unclassified Information categories maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). It is hosted at archives.gov/cui and lists every approved CUI category, the underlying authority that designates it, the marking requirements, and the safeguarding rules.

The CUI Registry includes hundreds of categories grouped by topic — Critical Infrastructure, Defense, Export Control, Financial, Immigration, Intelligence, International Agreements, Law Enforcement, Legal, Natural and Cultural Resources, NATO, Nuclear, Patent, Privacy, Procurement, Proprietary Business Information, Statistical, Tax, and Transportation.

A defense contractor unsure whether a piece of information qualifies as CUI should consult the registry. Most defense contractors will see CUI categories under Defense (Controlled Technical Information), Export Control (ITAR/EAR), and Critical Infrastructure.
