CUI Marking

Also known as: CUI banner

The standardized marking applied to CUI documents and digital artifacts to identify them as CUI and indicate any specific handling requirements.

CUI marking is the standardized labeling required by 32 CFR Part 2002 for any document, electronic file, or other artifact that contains Controlled Unclassified Information. The marking serves to alert handlers that the information requires safeguarding.

The basic CUI marking is the word CUI in the header and footer of a document. For CUI Specified, the marking includes the specific category abbreviation (e.g., CUI//SP-EXPT for export-controlled CUI) and any required dissemination control markings.

A C3PAO will sample CUI documents and verify they are properly marked. Improperly marked or unmarked CUI is a frequent finding.
