CTI

Also known as: Covered Defense Information · CDI

Covered Defense Information — the original DoD-specific umbrella term that included CUI plus operationally sensitive defense information. Largely subsumed by CUI under current policy.

Covered Defense Information (CDI), sometimes referred to as CTI in older documentation, is a Department of Defense-specific term that historically encompassed both Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and a broader set of unclassified controlled technical information.

Under current policy, the CUI program (32 CFR Part 2002) has largely subsumed the older CDI terminology. DFARS 252.204-7012 still uses the term 'Covered Defense Information' in its text, but in practice this refers to CUI for the purposes of CMMC implementation.

If you see CDI or CTI in older contract clauses or guidance, treat it as equivalent to CUI for the purposes of safeguarding requirements.
